Scenic Shropshire, Welsh Borders and Severn Valley Steam
Mon 16 July 2018
The borderlands between England and Wales known also as the Welsh Marches have remained relatively unchanged for decades. The unspoilt countryside, laid back lifestyles and pretty medieval towns and villages are all there for your enjoyment. We experience a Steam Train ride through the Severn valley and take a trip back to the Victorian times with memorable day out at Ironbridge.
A morning departure sees us travelling South with comfort stops en route to Chester where we have a little free time following lunch. Our journey continues through Whitchurch and on to our hotel at Wellington near Telford where we are greeted with complimentary Tea/Coffee and Biscuits. Dinner is served in the hotel tonight with added glass of wine on this first night.
Following breakfast we have a full day tour calling first at Shrewsbury which is one of England's finest Tudor towns with its black and white buildings and ancient alleyways. We have free time before taking in the rolling countryside on our way to Ludlow one of the most picturesque medieval towns in England with it's river, 13th century Castle and it's rich history. Time to explore before we return to our hotel for Dinner.
Following breakfast another full day excursion to Blists Hill and Ironbridge. There is a short journey to Ironbridge sitting on the River Severn which is recognised as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution during the 1700's. There are many curiosity shops and cafes near to the famous first Ironbridge in the world which spans the gorge below. We continue a short distance further to Blists Hill where we discover one of the largest open air Victorian Museums in the country. Entry is included into the attraction together with a further nine which make up the fascinating site. Costumed staff will guide you through and help you understand the life and hardship of the era. We return to our hotel where Dinner is served.
After breakfast we travel to Bridgnorth an attractive river port of two halves with the lower half siting on the River Severn. The castled upper part is connected by the steepest funicular railway in the UK. There are many shops and attractions including the leaning Castle where Charles I lost his head in 1645. Later we have a steam train ride along the scenic Severn Valley to Kidderminister where we rejoin our coach which takes us to the university and Catrhedral City of Worcester where we have the rest of the afternoon free to explore. We return to the Buckatree Hotel for Dinner.
Following breakfast we begin our journey homewards calling into Liverpool for lunch and a little free time, after a further comfort stop en route we arrive home late afternoon.
